Plant Power
Could slimming down mean stepping away from the steak and eggs and reaching for the veggies?
If you want to lose weight effectively, go vegan. At least that’s the verdict of a review of diet trials published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The study found that individuals who followed a vegetarian diet lost significantly more weight than those on other types of diet, with subjects adhering to a vegan diet losing even more weight. The study’s author attributed the effect to the high fibre content of plant foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables that typically make up a diet devoid of animal products.
If you’re a bodybuilder considering reducing or eliminating your intake of animal protein (dairy, eggs, fish and meat) you’ll need to ensure you are taking on plenty of soy, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes to keep you anabolic.
